It's been a long time coming, but I've begun to phase out tables from the design of this site. It took me a few hours to find the code and muck about with it, but it turned out to be breathtakingly simple once I had it running. The upshot is...
Of course, it's worth noting that the overwhelming majority of pages in this site are still using tables for layout, so I can't become too insufferable just yet.
The first of the pages to be reformatted was the "Egypt 1 Scenes" page. Apart from the reasons listed above, I like using CSS because changing the size of the window will allow the page to flow -- while still maintaining the correlation between photo and text. And in addition to less code is the fact that the code is much, much cleaner. The final reason -- and possibly the one that actually drove me to find the solution -- is that tables simply aren't meant as a layout tool. I felt this instinctively when I began using them years ago, and I'm glad to have an alternative that's a simple and elegant as CSS.
My, how times have changed. Between a digital camera (the very excellent Canon S110) and iPhoto (not quite excellent, but very, very good), doing photos on the web has changed immensely.
I think my favorite part of the change, really, is the bandwidth issue. I still try to keep image sizes modest, but it's not nearly the angst-ridden prospect that it once was. My general rule is to have no images greater than 50k in size.
Now for the tricky part. It's a few months later, and I'm going to put up a hodge-podge of stuff. NOW we get to find out whether this arrangement is going to work out... I'll start with a textual table of contents which will link to a gallery of thumbnails below. Click on the title text above each set of thumbnails to get to the page with the full-size photos.
After considerable contemplation, I've decided against using low-source images. Although load times are significantly improved (at least, from a psychological perspective), the burden of extra code, extra processing, and extra physical space used by the lowsource images all weigh against the use of lowsource images.
I suspect that I may continue to use them, but not on a wide-scale basis. Let's face it, if you're willing to check out a page with a bunch of photos, you'll either have a really fast connection, or you'll be willing to be patient.
I have to admit it: this is still very much an experimental section of the site. I haven't yet come upon a site that does a truly excellent job of handling photos in a flexible, manageable fashion. I suspect that it CAN be done, but every time you add flexibility, you reduce manageability. There's likely to be some kind of really elegant system, but I haven't grunted it out yet.
For the time being, I'm going to adopt an approach similar to what I've done with the Journals section of the site: I'll post some highlighted shots on this page, and then I'll shuffle them off into some kind of logical arrangement as I put up new material.
As a start, I'll put up some of the shots we took on our recent trip to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Can Tho, down in Mekong Delta in the southern part of Vietnam.
Enjoy!
